Lawmakers in Support of Repair Scores
PIRG delivered a letter signed by 58 state legislators from 28 states to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), urging the development of voluntary repair scores for laptops, phones, and other tech.
Repair scores for tech such as laptops, phones, and appliances, are like EnergyGuide labels for repairability. They provide consumers with a 1 through 10 score that measures availability of spare parts, ease of disassembly, and longevity of support, before they purchase expensive devices.
Scoring policies in other countries mean manufacturers already have these scores. We’re working to expand our repair score options here in the US.
