Nearly 80,000 gas cooktops recalled

About 77,000 gas cooktops sold at retail locations such as Lowe’s and The Home Depot from 2016 through 2022, have been voluntarily recalled because flaws in the control knobs can cause gas leaks and fire hazards according to an alert issued Thursday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The alert warned that the stems of control knobs on two models of Frigidaire gas cooktops can crack or break during use. The manufacturer, Electrolux Group, has received 63 reports of these parts cracking or breaking. At least one person has suffered minor injuries and at least one fire has been reported as a result of these defects.

“Cooking with gas, which consists mostly of methane, presents real health and safety risks. This recall underscores that there are cleaner and safer ways to cook our food,” said Abe Scarr, PIRG’s Energy and Utilities Program Director.

Tax credits and rebates created under the Inflation Reduction Act make it more affordable than ever to switch to efficient electric cooking,” said Johanna Neumann, Senior Director of the Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy for Environment America. “The sooner we leave the pollution, health and safety risks of cooking with methane gas in the rear view mirror, the better it will be for our health and the environment.”
