Heat pumps continue outselling gas furnaces
According to new 2025 data, Americans are buying 26% more heat pumps than gas furnaces
Heat pumps are bringing more high-efficiency, low-emission heat to Americans this year. According to new data from the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute, heat pump sales outpaced gas furnaces by more than 26 percent from July 2024 to July 2025.
Heat pumps are more energy-efficient than gas furnaces because they move heat rather than create it. While gas furnaces burn fossil fuels to create warm air, heat pumps use electricity to transfer existing heat into your home. Heat pumps have the added benefit that, when summer comes around, heat pumps can help cool your home by transferring heat back outside.
Space heating and cooling accounts for more than half of home energy use, so switching to an efficient electric HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system can make a big impact to reduce home energy use.
“Heat pumps provide highly-efficient and reliable heating and cooling,” said Johanna Neumann, Senior Director of the Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy at Environment America Research & Policy Center. “Energy savings that result from a more efficient system translate into less pollution and lower utility bills.”
