GoodRx penalized for allegedly sharing personal health data with advertisers

Our health data is often far less secure than we think it is.

Today the FTC announced it was barring GoodRx – the digital health platform known for offering prescription drug coupons – from sharing consumer health data with companies like Google and Facebook. Google and Facebook operate massive online advertising networks, and much data sent to them is used for placing targeted advertisements based on the data they’ve collected on users. GoodRx has agreed to pay $1.5 million in civil penalties for violating the FTC’s Health Breach Notification Rule. 

The discovery of GoodRx’s unauthorized disclosure of sensitive health information to advertisers is only the most recent example of companies misusing consumer health data.
