Advocates have known for years that e-bikes are an up and coming technology that has continued to grow in popularity due to their practicality and enjoyability, however according to a recent study they can also act as a tool to save riders money. In the United States the average family owns 2 vehicles and drives those vehicles approximately 18,000 miles on average per year. Interestingly, according to the federal highway administration nearly 60% of car trips taken are 5 miles or less. Based on this data, the study predicts that if families were to replace one of their cars with an e-bike and use it for their shorter trips they could save about $30,000 over a five year period.
These highlighted cost savings associated with using an e-bike as a mode of transportation are significant, yet they are not the only advantage to using this active mobility tech. By reducing the number of vehicles on the road e-bikes are able to reduce roadway congestion and greenhouse gas emissions that create air pollution and expedite the rate at which we experience climate change. As a result, the benefits of the rising popularity of e-bikes are not only experienced by riders, but by other community members as well.
