STATEMENT: Apple announces it will comply with California’s Right to Repair rules nationwide

iPhone maker, which has historically opposed the Right to Repair, announces it will abide by California’s new law everywhere in U.S. 

WASHINGTON — At a White House event on Tuesday about the Right to Repair, National Economic Council Director Lael Brainard announced that Apple will comply with California’s new Right to Repair rules nationwide. That means the company will provide access to spare parts, service manuals and repair tools on reasonable terms, regardless of what state Americans live in. Additionally, the White House endorsed more legislation nationally to support the Right to Repair, with support from Apple.

In response, PIRG’s Right to Repair Campaign Senior Director, Nathan Proctor, made the following statement: 

“We make, use and toss way too much stuff — and it’s way harder than it should be to fix what we already have. As Apple moves to reduce barriers to repair, that’s unequivocally good news. Apple makes a lot of products, and its conduct definitely influences other manufacturers.

“To the extent that repair barriers remain, we will continue our work to ensure that people can fix their stuff. From the thousands of consumers and repair shops we’ve organized, all the way up to the president of the United States, people agree that Right to Repair is common sense.

“We are grateful for the leadership of the National Economic Council, which, at the direction of President Biden, has worked continually to support Right to Repair since 2021. And we’re grateful that Apple is responding to the desires of its customers, as well as regulators and voters.”
