Statement by Mike Litt, U.S. PIRG Consumer Campaign Director, on the Senate Banking Committee’s approval of the nomination of Kathy Kraninger for Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

“The Director of the Consumer Bureau is tasked with making consequential decisions that could mean the difference between families achieving the American dream or falling into financial ruin.

The full Senate should confirm a nominee with expertise in consumer protection and experience in enforcing consumer banking laws. Further, any nominee should support the Consumer Bureau’s mission: protecting consumers. Kathy Kraninger showed during her confirmation hearing that she fails to meet these minimum standards.”

U.S. PIRG led a coalition letter to the Senate Banking Committee outlining the minimum standards that should be met by any nominee for Director of the Consumer Bureau.

U.S. PIRG is the federation of state Public Interest Research Groups. PIRGs are non-profit, non-partisan public interest advocacy organizations that stand up to powerful interests whenever they threaten our health and safety, our financial security, or our right to fully participate in our democratic society.
