Utilities’ energy-efficiency plans need improvement

Since 2008, Maryland’s energy efficiency program has saved ratepayers more than $4 billion on energy bills and reduced Maryland’s greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of 9.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide. That’s equal to taking 2 million cars off the road for a year. Through incentives and rebates for home energy audits, weatherization, and efficient appliances EmPOWER reduces energy consumption, lowering utility bills while minimizing peak demand.

Maryland PIRG Foundation research includes recommendations to strengthen and improve the program to achieve greater total energy and financial savings, better serve limited-income Marylanders, and deliver even more environmental and public health benefits.

Now, the Maryland Public Service Commission is reviewing the  year plans for Maryland’s utility companies’ energy efficiency programs. Maryland PIRG Foundation has provided top line feedback on the plans and the Office of the People’s Counsel issued an 89-page report that comprehensively evaluates the program areas and offers recommendations for the Commission’s consideration.

As a state, we must conserve more energy, use energy more wisely and efficiently, and rely on sources of energy that are clean, renewable and less environmentally damaging. Doing so will create big savings for our climate, our health and our wallets. If done right, the EmPOWER program has tremendous potential to help us along the way.
