Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture revealed a plan for making the food system more resilient to the types of threats that we’ve seen in the last few years, such as worker shortages, processing bottlenecks, and natural disasters. This new plan was drawn up in response to the Biden-Harris administration’s Executive Order 14017 America’s Supply Chains, and will be funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and other relief legislation.
In addition to making the food system more resilient, the new framework also aims to give consumers better access to nutritious food and address hunger and food insecurity linked to the pandemic. After all, one of the most disturbing impacts of the pandemic is how much food has been wasted while people have gone hungry. Especially in early 2020, farmers were forced to dump milk, euthanize animals raised for meat, and let produce rot in fields due to supply chain disruptions.
