Colorado tackles air pollution with statewide e-bike rebate

Qualified residents can earn $1500 incentives on electric bike purchases

DENVER — The Colorado Energy Office launches the Community Access to Electric Bicycles Rebate Program today by opening up the application process for qualified Colorado residents. Electric bikes use rechargeable batteries and travel up to 28 mph, combining the flexibility, convenience, and health benefits of biking with the ease and ability to travel greater distances a motor provides. The rebates come from last year’s bill SB22-193, a package of air quality initiatives that included $12 million in public funding for electric bike rebate programs, making Colorado a leader nationally in public funding for e-bikes. 

“Finding practical alternatives to individual car trips is paramount in reducing the state’s worsening air pollution,” said CoPIRG public health advocate Alex Simon. “Electric bicycles produce zero emissions and are an increasingly important tool in reducing emissions from the transportation sector and this program is an exciting opportunity for many Colorado residents.” 

Rebates up to $1,100 for a regular electric bike and $1,500 for an e-cargo bike are available to income-qualified residents over the age of 18 whose household income is less than 80% of the area median income (AMI), and $500 or $900 respectively for income -qualified residents whose household income is between 80% – 100% of the area median income (AMI). Rebates can also be used for locks and helmets. 

The online application will be available on the program website beginning at 9AM today, and run through Monday August 21st at 1PM. Once the application period closes, applicants will randomly be selected to complete their application and redeem their rebate. 

The state’s program follows the City of Denver’s wildly popular rebate program. As of July 20, 2023 the city had provided 6,118 rebates ranging from $300 to $1400 depending on the type of bike and income level of the applicant. Recognizing the importance and momentum of e-bikes in Colorado, Governor Polis officially declared September 21, 2022 ‘Colorado E-Bike Day’ following an event hosted by CoPIRG and Bicycle Colorado highlighting the health and environmental benefits of e-bikes.
