Thanks to a new law that went into effect on Jan. 1, 2024, Coloradans can save money and cut air pollution at the same time by enjoying a 30% discount on electric lawn mowers, leaf blowers, trimmers and snow blowers at participating retailers statewide.

Part of a broader effort to cut down the high amount of pollution and noise generated by gas-powered lawn and garden equipment, the new law is designed to make it as easy as possible for consumers to enjoy the discount: no rebate paperwork to fill out, no tax credit to file. This is because the tax credit goes to participating retailers, in exchange for offering a 30% discount to their customers.

Where can I get the discount on electric lawn equipment?

The key to receiving the new tax credit discount on cleaner, quieter electric lawn mowers, leaf blowers, trimmers and other handheld lawn and garden tools – plus snow blowers – is to go to a participating retailer. We’ve surveyed local retailers to help take some of the guesswork out of this for you. This list was last updated August 5, 2024. As we hear back from more companies, we will add their information here, so be sure to check back.

Where can I find electric lawn equipment rebates and other incentives in Colorado?

In addition to the new 30% statewide discount, residential customers, governments and companies may be eligible for additional financial incentives to help make the switch to cleaner, quieter electric lawn and garden tools.

What should I do with my old gas mower?

If you already own gas-powered lawn equipment, you may be wondering what to do with it when you make the switch to electric tools. To avoid further air pollution and unecessary noise in your community, plus prevent your old machines from ending up in a landfill, the best option is to take it to your local metal recycler or scrapyard. The Regional Air Quality Council’s Mow Down Pollution program has a list of locations along the Front Range that may accept old gas lawn equipment—be sure to call the location first to confirm. If you’re in a different part of the state, call your local scrapyard or metal recycler to see if you can take it there.

Why does it matter to go electric for lawn care?

Our recent report found that gas-powered lawn mowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers, chainsaws and other garden tools generate an astonishing amount of pollution and noise. Pollution generated by gas lawn equipment has been linked to health problems including asthma attacks, reproductive ailments, mental health challenges and cancer. Emissions cuts from the lawn care sector are also an important way to reduce ozone pollution at a time when Colorado is experiencing some of the worst air pollution in the country. Plus, electric equipment tends to be significantly quieter than gas-powered tools, easier to use and maintain, and saves money over time.
