Take Action

This year, CoPIRG worked to pass 17 bills during the 2023 legislative session. You can find details on all the bills in our 2023 Legislative Report.

We thank every legislator who voted yes on these bills – every vote is important.

However, some legislators played a particularly important role as bill sponsors.

In Colorado, every legislator is only guaranteed five bills – so we thank these legislators for choosing these CoPIRG-backed policies. In addition, a sponsor must present and defend the bill to their colleagues both in committees and on the floor and is bottomline responsible for shepherding the bill through the legislative process.

Sponsoring a bill is not an easy task and we want to recognize and applaud the work of those legislators.

Legislators who sponsored three or more CoPIRG-endorsed bills in the 2023 session:

Senator Lisa Cutter championed seven CoPIRG-backed bills including policies to improve compostable product labeling; update emissions and energy efficiency standards for certain appliances; establish tax incentives for electric vehicles, bikes and heat pumps; require home warranties to allow consumers to switch from gas to electric stoves; tackle high utility bills by reducing our reliance on gas; increase consumer protections around medical bills; and limit unnecessary hospital facility fees.

Senator Faith Winter championed four CoPIRG-backed bills including policies to update emissions and energy efficiency standards for certain appliances; cut ozone pollution from the oil and gas sector; advance charging and parking options for electric vehicles; and enhance the fare-free transit grant program for 2023.

Representative Cathy Kipp championed three CoPIRG-backed bills including policies to limit the sale of bee-killing neonicotinoid pesticides; update emissions and energy efficiency standards for certain appliances; and require home warranties to allow consumers to switch from gas to electric stoves.

Representative Mike Weissman championed three CoPIRG-backed bills including policies to establish incentives for electric vehicles, bikes and heat pumps; stop out-of-state lenders from skirting Colorado interest rates laws; and increase consumer protections around medical bills.

There were a total of 36 Colorado legislators who sponsored CoPIRG-backed bills.

In addition to the names above, the following legislators also sponsored one or two CoPIRG-backed bills:

Representatives: Jennifer Bacon, Andrew Boesenecker, Kyle Brown, Marc Catlin, Chris deGruy Kennedy, Ruby Dickson, Meg Froelich, Junie Joseph, Javier Mabrey, Matthew Martinez, Tisha Mauro, Karen McCormick, Barbara McLachlan, Naquetta Ricks, Emily Sirota, Brianna Titone, Alex Valdez, Stephanie Vigil, Ron Weinberg, Jenny Willford.

Senators: Mark Baisley, Janet Buckner, Tony Exum, Steve Fenberg, Julie Gonzales, Chris Hansen, Nick Hinrichsen, Sonya Jaquez Lewis, Janice Marchman, Kyle Mullica, Kevin Priola, Dylan Roberts.

Thank you to these legislators for leading the way on a number of important public interest issues.
