We’re still a year away from the 2016 presidential election, but we’ve already seen massive fundraising numbers — more than $250 million — coming from Super PACs and outside groups. That’s a wave of mega-donor spending which is drowning out the voice of regular voters, and it’s growing faster than any of us thought possible.
You don’t have to be a Jedi Knight to fight big money in politics. Here are a few ways you can make a difference right now:
We want to empower regular Americans with a system that matches small contributions to candidates who don’t take large or corporate contributions.
Right now, there’s legislation in the House and Senate that would do just that. Here’s how it works: Say you give $50 to a candidate. This system would match it at a six-to-one rate, turning your $50 contribution into $350. This means candidates would be more likely to spend time trying to get the support of many, smaller contributors, instead of relying on mega-donors to bankroll their campaigns.
When you speak out, your friends listen. Help us spread the word about our work to reclaim our democracy by sharing one of today’s graphics.
At U.S. PIRG, we take on threats to our democracy by raising the voice of regular voters in the fight against big money in politics. But we can’t lead this fight without your support. Please take a moment to donate $5, $10, or $20.
