Last year, 2 in 5 patients in the US had an unreasonable wait time to get an appointment with a health care provider. Recently, we’ve heard from patients who waited 6 months or more for a doctor to be available to see them.

Long waits mean patients are faced with a terrible choice: wait to get treatment or a diagnosis, or attempt to find another health care provider for your care. Unfortunately, sometimes finding an alternative is difficult. If you need a referral or prior authorization for an appointment, you may not be able to go to another physician, or the wait to get permission from your insurer may be just as long. If you choose to go to an out-of-network provider with a shorter wait time, your insurance may not cover it and your costs will likely be drastically more. Sometimes, patients just don’t seek care because the wait time for an appointment is too long.
