On January 18, 2022, the Washington Senate Committee on Environment, Energy and Technology held a public hearing for Senate Bill 5697, the "RENEW Act," to modernize our state's recycling system. WashPIRG's Advocate Nicole Walter submitted written testimony in support.

Bill introduced to modernize Washington’s recycling system

Senator Mona Das introduced the RENEW Recycling Act (SB 5697) on Wednesday January 5th, which would address problems with Washington's waste and recycling systems by holding packaging producers accountable for the waste they are creating. Representative Liz Berry plans to champion the bill in the House.

Every year, the average American throws out nearly 1,800 pounds of trash. On Thursday, PIRG Education Fund, Environment America Research & Policy Center, Frontier Group and Community Action Works released a new report, Trash in America: Moving from destructive consumption towards a zero-waste system. The report examines America’s waste problem and recommends 10 steps the United States should take to build a “zero waste” economy.
