Part one of EPA’s ‘National Recycling Strategy’ underwhelms

DENVER --  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized its first National Recycling Strategy, part one of what the agency promises to be a “series on building a circular economy for all.” After receiving input from various stakeholders, including U.S. PIRG, the EPA chose five objectives, all of which focus on post-consumer waste management, that have historically yielded mixed results:

Every year, the average American throws out nearly 1,800 pounds of trash. On Thursday, PIRG Education Fund, Environment America Research & Policy Center, Frontier Group and Community Action Works released a new report, Trash in America: Moving from destructive consumption towards a zero-waste system. The report examines America’s waste problem and recommends 10 steps the United States should take to build a “zero waste” economy.

Statement: Virgin plastic fee would encourage recycling but Congress should go further

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island introduced legislation on Wednesday that would enact a new per-pound fee on virgin plastic in single-use products. The bill, entitled "Rewarding Efforts to Decrease Unrecycled Contaminants in Ecosystems (REDUCE) Act," would direct revenue to a plastic waste reduction fund.
