Take action to stop deepfake impersonation scams

Dear Director Chopra:

I strongly urge your agency to work to investigate and protect consumers from the increasing threat of AI-generated “deepfake” voice clips and videos used for financial fraud.

Advances in technology are making deepfake scams more convincing and dangerous than ever. To protect us from the emerging threat, we recommend:

• Raising awareness of the danger of deepfakes, and providing resources to help individuals and businesses recognize the risks.
• Coordinating with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate current and future deployment of biometric authentication systems at financial institutions and the risks they pose.
• Ensuring that consumers are protected when they are defrauded into initiating transactions by scammers.
