Mass. legislators, advocates celebrate major new climate law

MASSPIRG joined leaders of environmental and civic organizations and elected officials to celebrate the passage of major climate legislation. The new climate law will reduce energy waste, ramp up the growth of wind and solar power, and help transition Massachusetts’ buildings and transportation system from fossil fuels to clean energy. Following months of work by legislative leaders, including energy committee chairs Rep. Jeff Roy and Sen. Mike Barrett, Gov. Charlie Baker signed the bill into law last week.

Reinstated ‘polluter pays’ tax goes into effect, protecting Americans from toxic waste

A chemical excise tax to fund Superfund toxic waste site cleanups nationwide will go into effect on Friday, reinstating one of several “polluter pays” taxes that had been allowed to lapse 26 years ago. The EPA’s Superfund program is responsible for cleaning up the country’s most hazardous waste sites.

Coalition: U.S. PIRG, Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety, the Center for Auto Safety and the Consumer Federation of America - safety groups that are usually at odds with auto manufacturers - today publicly commended General Motors for the auto giant’s recently announced commitment not to sell used vehicles with unrepaired safety recall defects on its soon-to-be-launched used car platform, CarBravo. Too many car dealers sell dangerous recalled used vehicles.
