Urge your governor to get the lead out of school drinking water
TAKE ACTION
Our children need safe drinking water — especially at school, where they go to learn and play each day. Unfortunately, lead is contaminating drinking water at schools and preschools across the country.
Lead harms kids’ brains, affecting how they learn, grow and behave. According to the EPA,”[i]n children, low levels of [lead] exposure have been linked to damage to the central and peripheral nervous system, learning disabilities, shorter stature, impaired hearing, and impaired formation and function of blood cells.”
As more and more schools test their water, they are finding lead.
We believe these confirmed cases are just the tip of the iceberg, for several reasons. Most schools have at least some lead in their pipes, plumbing or fixtures. And where there is lead, there is risk of contamination. Moreover, several states only show test results for taps where lead concentrations exceed 5 or even 15 parts per billion (ppb), even though there is no safe level of lead. And finally, many schools have only taken “first draw” samples, which do not include water that has been sitting in contact with lead pipes or plumbing away from the tap. Lead concentrations in water are also highly variable, and so even several samples can miss the full extent of contamination.
This map does not reflect where, whether or how effectively some schools have sought to remediate lead contamination confirmed by testing. We are simply aiming to demonstrate the scope of the problem stemming from the use of lead in our schools’ water delivery systems.
Working to Get the Lead Out
We are working at the local, state and federal levels to Get the Lead Out of schools’ drinking water. Replacing lead-bearing fountains with filtered water stations is one key step to ensuring safer water for our kids at school. For more information and to take action, see our Get the Lead Out toolkit.
Especially if your school was built before 2014, it is highly likely that the water fountains, faucets and other parts contain significant amounts of lead. Test results can vary widely, but the risk is always there. Ask your local school officials to replace water outlets and install filters certified to remove lead. In addition, we’re calling on all states to “get the lead out” of schools' drinking water. Please urge your governor to take strong action to protect our children’s health.
