Statement: MASSPIRG supports COVID-19 suspension of deposit system enforcement, looks forward to expansion of program in the future
Out of an abundance of caution due to the spread of COVID-19 in the state, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office announced that they are suspending enforcement of the requirements for retailers to accept beverage containers that have a deposit. This decision is effective immediately and until further notice or until the current state of emergency is terminated.
MASSPIRG Executive Director Janet Domenitz issued the following statement:
“All measures to protect public health right now are paramount, and we appreciate our state authorities taking action to prevent the spread of COVID-19. As most people know, container deposits are the single most effective reuse and recycle program in our state. We look forward to the commonwealth lifting this suspension, and working to expand the deposit system to include water bottles and other containers when the time is right.”
