Statement: MASSPIRG lauds Massachusetts’ decision to restart bottle bill enforcement

BOSTON — Gov.Charlie Baker announced Friday that the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the State Attorney General’s Office will resume enforcement of beverage container redemption requirements in June. 

In response, MASSPIRG Executive Director Janet Domenitz issued the following statement:

“We applaud Governor Baker, Attorney General Maura Healey, DEP Commissioner Martin Suuberg and all others in the administration who heeded the call over the past few weeks from so many of us that it was time to get back to the single most effective form of recycling we have in Massachusetts: beverage container deposits. Facts and data matter, and they all show that deposits work. The bottle bill is a win/win/win. It reduces litter, saves cities and towns disposal costs, and uses beverage container materials in the most sustainable way. Living at home for the past two months has been a lesson for all of us that resources should be used wisely, our outdoors are precious, and we are all caretakers of this planet. We look forward to working with the administration on this and other measures to make Massachusetts a cleaner, healthier, more sustainable state.”
