Maryland PIRG is proud to support the Maryland Metro/Transit Funding Act onf 2018. We have signed onto this letter to Governor Hogan, President Miller, and Speaker Busch to advance this legislation that increases funding for the Maryland Transit Administration and the DC metropolitan-area Metro transit system to support upgrades and improvements for transit system and requires long term planning for regional Baltimore transit system.
When large companies harm the public through fraud, financial scams, chemical spills, dangerous products or other misdeeds, they almost never address those allegations in court proceedings and pay a fine or penalty. Instead, most companies negotiate out-of-court settlements that resolve the charges in return for stipulated payments or promised remedies.
A new report from the Maryland PIRG Foundation finds that $71 Million from the Volkswagen (VW) settlement is headed to Maryland to help clean up the state’s transportation system and recommends using the funds to purchase electric vehicle fast charging stations for the state’s highways along with an aggressive expansion of all-electric transit buses to replace aging, dirty, diesel buses.
