Miamians now have a new tool to help them fight food waste and grocery bills at the same time: Too Good To Go. The app, which just launched in Miami, has been expanding to major cities across the globe over the last seven years, connecting customers with food that restaurants, grocers, and other local food providers would otherwise get rid of. Customers can browse deals from local favorites or filter for specific dietary preferences or the time of day they’re available to pick up the discounted items, which are often marked down by more than 60% of the regular price.

This is great news for anyone who likes trying new food or getting a good deal, but it’s also an important part of the solution to food waste. Between 30 and 40% of all food in the U.S. gets wasted every year. When we waste food, all the resources that went into producing it upstream are squandered. And when that food breaks down in landfills, it produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Technological solutions such as Too Good To Go play an important role in rescuing food and ensuring it reaches people, not a landfill.
