Generac recalls more portable generators, this time for fire risk
Owners should get a free repair kit before operating again
Generac Power Systems Inc. has recalled 64,000 portable generators because the fuel tank can malfunction, causing a risk of fire and burns, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC.) The company has received 27 complaints of a generator overheating, leading to three incidents of severe burns.
This recall affecting eight models follows the company’s recall reannouncement in November 2022 for other models deemed a risk because malfunctioning handles caused 37 cases of fingers being amputated or crushed.
With the new recall, people who own the generator should not use it until they get it repaired with a free kit from the Wisconsin-based company. Customers can get more information here.
The generators were sold at home improvement and hardware stores nationwide and online from April 2011 through June 2023, at a cost of $3,300 to $3,650.
Last November, Generac issued a reannouncement of about 321,160 generators because at least 29 injuries occurred after the previous recall in July 2021.
The CPSC has been grappling with ways to get the word out about recalls to more people more quickly. There have been several significant cases where injuries, deaths and house fires involving a product have occurred months or even years after the original recall.
