Tell the FDA: Approve Kessler Petition, Rescind GRAS Status for Refined Carbohydrates

FDA Commissioner Makary:

Refined carbohydrates are a key ingredient involved in the creation of ultra-processed foods. The refining process fundamentally changes the composition of the food such that our bodies process it differently than unprocessed food. This was not understood when they were first afforded Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status, and should cause us to reconsider that status. Especially because the consumption of foods containing these ultra-processed ingredients are likely directly impacting our health and contributing in part to the chronic disease crisis. The FDA should approve former Commissioner David Kessler’s petition and rescind the GRAS status of refined carbohydrates.
