CALPIRG Students hold Right to Repair event in San Diego
On Friday, a group of student activists held an event with a local repair business to call for the passage of Senate Bill 244
Tony Heupel, the owner of iTech iPhone & MacBook Repair, oversees the repairs of more than 4,000 smartphones, computers, tablets and other electronics for San Diegans every year. What started as a small operation out of his car 15 years ago has grown into a thriving business. But Tony’s work is becoming increasingly difficult because of electronic manufacturers’ restrictions on repairs.
To fix this broken system, Tony joined a group of CALPIRG student activists outside his business to call for the passage of state Sen. Susan Talamantes Eggman’s Right to Repair Act (Senate Bill 244), which would provide Californians the resources they need to fix electronics.
The bill has since passed the California legislature and will soon be heading to the governor’s desk for a final signature.
