California clean lighting law takes effect

Screw or bayonet base compact fluorescent lamps are no longer allowed for sale in California as of January 1, 2024 thanks to state legislation sponsored by Assemblymember Ash Kalra that passed two years ago.

“Phasing out fluorescent lighting will reduce exposure to toxic mercury and slash energy waste,” said Laura Deehan, state director of Environment California.

All fluorescent lamps contain mercury by design. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that harms our nervous, digestive, and immune systems. Other common fluorescent lights, including pin-base compact fluorescent lamps and linear fluorescent lamps, will be phased out in California starting on January 1st, 2025.

Consumers who see screw or bayonet base fluorescent lamps for sale in a California store can help make sure that store owner gets into compliance with the law by taking a photo and submitting to this Google Form. This info will then get shared with the relevant enforcing authority.
