“CALPIRG is thrilled to be part of this event today, celebrating the launch of online voter registration.

“We want to thank Senator Leland Yee for authoring the legislation to establish online voter registration, and Secretary of State Debra Bowen for working to quickly implement online voter registration this fall.

“Our democracy depends on an engaged citizenry. Online voter registration is a no-brainer – it will make it easier for Californians to participate in our elections, while saving our election officials time and money.

“Online voter registration will benefit anyone who needs to register or reregister, but it may particularly benefit younger voters who are newly eligible to vote and move residences frequently.

“Since 1984 CALPIRG has worked to engage and mobilize young voters – spearheading massive registration and ‘get out the vote’ drives to turn young people out to the polls and empower them to become active and vocal participants of the political process.

“For the past several months CALPIRG has reached out to hundreds of college campus leaders to let them know about online voter registration. We are eager to work with students and administrators to take advantage of this new opportunity to make it easier for young people to vote.”

The New Voters Project is a non-partisan project of the Student PIRGs, and it is the largest non-partisan student mobilization campaign in the country. Here in California, the New Voters’ Project is helping to register 30,000 young California voters in this election cycle through a combination of in-person and online outreach on college campuses.
