Now that California has the funds to get the lead out of children’s drinking water, CALPIRG is providing the tools to make it happen.

On Nov. 30, CALPIRG distributed a toolkit to parents and community leaders to help them put $200 million (allotted by the recently passed federal infrastructure bill) to work reducing children’s lead exposures from schools’ drinking water.

As suggested by the report, replacing fountains with water bottle stations that have filters certified to remove lead is a great place to start and will cost only a fraction of the federal funds allocated to California. Additionally, the toolkit includes facts and resources about lead contamination, a short educational video, and sample call-to-action materials.

“Ensuring safe drinking water at school is not always an easy homework assignment,” said CALPIRG State Director Jenn Engstrom. “Our toolkit will help parents work with their school officials to get the lead out.”
