Report reveals safer, healthier alternatives to Wisconsin’s highway expansion project
WISPIRG’s case against Wisconsin’s I-94 East-West corridor expansion project is now stronger than ever.
A Sept. 14 report, released by a coalition including WISPIRG and titled “Fix at Six,” delves into the Transit/Rehab Alternative, a substitute for the expansion plan that would better address the current and future needs of Wisconsinites. The Transit/Rehab Alternative still would repair the safety and operational concerns of the highway while investing in more pressing transportation needs, including more transit options.
The “Fix at Six” report offers concrete steps for more sustainable transportation options. They include repairing the highway and leaving it as six lanes; adding a new rapid bus transit line; and adding a bike/walking path through the neighborhoods traversed by the highway.
“Now is the time to stop building costly highway boondoggles that exacerbate the climate crisis and start investing in our existing roads and cleaner, healthier transportation choices.” said Megan Severson, state director of Wisconsin Environment, a WISPIRG partner.
