Tell your legislators: Pass the Recycling Reform Act
Legislators will soon be voting on a bill that would improve recycling in Washington.
A bill that would improve Washington's recycling and reduce plastic waste has passed the House policy committee, sending it to a final House floor vote.
The Recycling Reform Act (SB 5284) would improve our state’s recycling rates by creating a producer responsibility program that holds companies financially responsible for the waste their plastic and paper packaging creates.
Only 39% of residential recyclable materials are actually being recycled, while the rest is being sent to our landfills. The bill’s primary sponsor, Representative Liz Berry (D-36) told her fellow committee members that the bill would “increase recycling [rates] by 25% by 2032” in Washington.
Business, labor, environmental groups, and local governments have come together in bipartisan support of this bill that would modernize Washington’s recycling system and expand free, curbside recycling to all Washington residents.
After a debate, the bill successfully passed through the House Environment & Energy Committee by a tight vote of 11 to 10 on March 31st.
The bill has already passed the Senate, but now we need to make sure that our Representatives push it across the finish line. Send your Representatives a message below, urging them to pass the Recycling Reform Act.
