U.S. PIRG joins ninety groups in support of substantial improvements to cosmetics regulations

U.S. PIRG joined together with 90 businesses, consumer groups, health associations, and non-profit organizations to urge the Senate HELP committee to strengthen the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022, which will amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to create new cosmetic safety protections. The United States last updated its federal cosmetic laws in 1938. Every day, Americans use roughly 12 personal care products which, when combined together, expose us to more than 160 distinct chemicals. These toxins not only enter our bodies through their intended use, but the leftover product that gets washed away often ends up polluting our drinking water and waterways. The draft bill from the Senate HELP committee takes steps to protect consumers but could do much more to safeguard public health. The letter sent by U.S. PIRG and allies can be seen here:
