As a result of a shareholder action by advocacy group As You Sow, Micosoft agreed to release a study of the environmental benefits of expanding access to repair last fall. The report, “Summary of Sustainability Benefits of Microsoft Device Repair,” is now public. The study showed strong environmental reasons to expand repair, inclduing finding that repairing a product instead of replacing it can yield a 92% reduction in waste and climate-harming emissions.
It's harder than it should be to fix our stuff. Manufacturers of every electronic product from toasters to tractors create barriers that stymie repair from owners or independent repair businesses. It's fueling a rise in electronic waste, the loss of independent repair businesses -- and ultimately more cost and more waste for consumers.
