Right To Repair

Right to Repair passes in Connecticut state Senate

If passed by the House and signed into law, this legislation would mandate that manufacturers provide consumers and small businesses access to all available repair materials.

On Thursday, May 15, the state Senate passed SB 3, an omnibus consumer protection package, with a vote of 26 to 10. Included in this package is a section to protect consumers’ Right to Repair.

Section 3 of Senate Bill 3, sponsored by 27 Senators, contains language to ensure consumers and independent repair shops can access repair parts, tools, and information needed to repair electronic devices and appliances.

If passed by the House and signed into law, this legislation would mandate that manufacturers provide consumers and small businesses access to all available repair materials. Increasingly, manufacturers can refuse to provide any access to needed repair materials, pushing consumers to use their authorized service locations.

The Right to Repair section of this legislation is supported by ConnPIRG and Environment Connecticut, who previously testified in support of the legislation.
