Last week New Jersey lawmakers celebrated the unveiling of NJ Transit’s new electric bus fleet. The 8 electric buses purchased will be tested over the next year in Camden in order for the state to gather more information that will set the stage for the state to continue to transition its fleet. Aside from the additional information that the project will gather, this trial project is also unique in that it was completely funded by fines paid by polluters meaning that the project did not cost taxpayers a dollar.

This trial project is a significant step towards making a fully electrified fleet a possibility for New Jersey. Full electrification would provide the state with a number of environmental and public health benefits. Electric buses do not emit greenhouse gasses while running which makes them a more environmentally clean alternative to traditional diesel powered buses and importantly, it also means that EV buses do not produce the same types of harmful air pollutants as their counterparts. This reduction in air pollution could lead to significant public health benefits due to a reduction in related respiratory ailments.  To learn more about the environmental and public health benefits that electric buses can provide visit Electric Buses in America

Tell the Governor: make all state-owned vehicles electric

State government fleets operate thousands of vehicles, and agencies can use their purchasing power to invest in more electric vehicles. Ask your Governor to lead by example by directing state agencies to purchase electric vehicles.
