How to get money from the Facebook settlement

If you’ve used Facebook sometime in the last 16 years, you may qualify for a cut of the settlement money.

Social media companies know a lot about us.

Meta – Facebook’s parent company – has been sued for alleged misuse of user data, and is paying $725 million in settlement funds to affected users. That could be you – if you were a Facebook user at any point between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022.

You can submit a claim here to possibly qualify for a financial reward as a part of the class action.

What you need to submit a claim for the Facebook settlement

This process is very easy. Start by going to the official Facebook settlement class action website.

All you need to provide is your basic contact information, and an element of your Facebook account – like your username, phone number, or an associated email address. Then you need to select what method you would like to receive a payment through.

Users have until August 25th to submit a claim.

Can I submit a settlement claim if I deleted my Facebook account?

Yes! As long as you had an account between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, you can qualify. There are some extra steps involved, but you can and should still apply.

What is the Facebook case?

Meta was sued over the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018 – when the company was accused of allowing the firm to use a personality quiz app to access the personal information of users without their consent. Meta maintains no wrongdoing, and has chosen to settle the case.

If you get a payment from Meta, it probably won’t be very much, and it’ll likely take awhile before you get a check. But it’s worth it – even just to send companies the message that people care about their privacy.
