In September, U.S. PIRG Education Fund released Highway Boondoggles 7, the latest in our series of reports with Frontier Group highlighting wasteful and damaging highway expansion projects across America. The report identified seven new proposed projects, costing more than $22 billion, that would harm communities and the environment while failing to deliver significant benefits.

Frontier Group associate director and senior policy analyst Tony Dutzik recently discussed the report on the Strong Towns podcast with the organization’s president, Chuck Marohn. In addition to reviewing the specific projects in this year’s report, the podcast also delves into what has (and hasn’t) changed in transportation since the first edition of the Highway Boondoggles report in 2014; the opportunities and challenges posed by the bipartisan federal infrastructure law; and the role of transportation finance in driving the construction of wasteful projects. (See U.S. PIRG Education Fund’s 2022 white paper on transportation finance, Shifting Gears, for more details.)
