Coalition demands big grocery chains stop digital discrimination against unplugged seniors

This week, we joined leading groups in identical letters to 12 big grocery chain CEOs. As Dee-Ann Durbin’s Associated Press story explains:

“A coalition of consumer groups is asking grocery chains to rethink their digital-only coupons, saying the deals discriminate against people who don’t have smartphones or reliable internet access.”

From the coalition release:

“In the past couple of years, more and more weekly specials advertised by some supermarkets for meat, fish, poultry, produce, and store brand items are so-called ” digital-only deals.” They require shoppers to first go online to electronically “clip” the offers to add them to their loyalty card account to be charged the sale price in the store.”

PIRG, Consumer Reports, Consumer Action and the National Consumers League worked with Edgar Dworsky of the Consumer World website on the project. Consumer World is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, non-profit consumer websites. More on the story from Consumer World’s Mouseprint site.
