High medical bills are often a shock to individuals and families, and can lead to financial hardship, debt, and even bankruptcy as it leaves Oregonians vulnerable to other kinds of debt like credit cards and mortgages. Creditors will often wrongfully put these debts into collections, given that an estimated 4 in 9 patients sued for medical debt are entitled to have their bill written off.

Right now, lawmakers are considering HB 2008, a bill that will protect Oregonians while they are in debt collections so that they can retain enough assets to pay back the debt and take action against creditors who wrongfully put their debt into collections. Tell your representative to vote yes on HB 2008 to enact debt protections for Oregon consumers.
