The Oregon Supreme Court has affirmed the constitutionality of campaign contribution limits in Oregon. The ruling that the court issued Thursday in Multnomah County v Mehrwein overturned previous precedent from the 1997 decision Vanetta v Keisling.

Charlie Fisher, OSPIRG’s state director, issued the following statement:

“This is a huge win for people-powered democracy in Oregon, especially since our elections have historically been awash in money. During the 2018 elections, for example, just 18 big donors accounted for nearly a quarter of all campaign contributions from individuals. When big money is allowed to dominate, the views of regular people are often forgotten. We know that Oregonians want a democracy that represents regular people, and that vision is now one step closer to becoming a reality.”
