PHILADELPHIA — Following the release last month of U.S. PIRG’s Education Fund’s Food Recall Failure report, which rated 26 top grocery store chains on their transparency about food recalls, Trader Joe’s provided new survey answers and clarified where that information lives online and in its stores.
That additional information raised Trader Joe’s grade to a 92 (an A), the highest mark among all the national supermarkets covered by the report.
In response, U.S. PIRG Education Fund’s Consumer Watchdog Adam Garber released the following statement:
“We thank Trader Joe’s for responding to our survey and making it clear how they notify consumers about these health risks. Food recalls don’t do any good if shoppers don’t know about them.
“While most of Trader Joe’s competitors chose to neither reply to our survey nor be transparent about their notification policies, it’s never too late to do the right thing and protect the public.
“Now, we’re calling on other supermarket chains to disclose how they notify customers about food recalls so can keep themselves and their households healthy.”
