NJPIRG-backed energy efficiency bill becomes law

The best energy efficiency program you’ve never heard of has become law here in New Jersey.
In June, the state Legislature passed a bill to enact a statewide Commercial Property Assessed Energy (C-PACE) program. Signed into law by Gov. Phil Murphy on Aug. 24, the bill will make it easier for businesses, nonprofits, private institutions, agricultural producers and apartment building owners to pay for energy efficiency and renewable energy improvements. Not only does it mirror recommendations in the governor’s own Energy Master Plan, but C-PACE has also been successfully implemented in 24 other states so far.
NJPIRG has been working since early 2020 to organize public and legislative support for this crucial program.
“New Jersey has set bold energy efficiency goals to fight climate change and help consumers save money. C-PACE is one piece of the puzzle that’s needed to reach those goals,” said Emma Horst-Martz, NJPIRG advocate. “This is the kind of practical policy solution we need, and I am grateful to state Sens. Smith and Bateman, Assemblymembers Mukherji and Kennedy, and former Assemblymember Pinkin for their leadership on this issue.”
