NJPIRG-backed act is passed by state Senate

Your run-of-the-mill stoves and refrigerators just became much more exciting.

On Dec. 20, New Jersey’s state Senate just passed a law to update energy efficiency standards for major everyday appliances. The law will save energy, water and money for consumers by updating a set of requirements for several household and commercial appliances, including showerheads and light fixtures.

This is good news for consumers who will benefit from $132 million a year in savings on their monthly utility bills when using appliances that follow the new standards in the future.  New Jersey would cut 178,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide — the equivalent of taking 72,000 cars off the road.

By implementing better appliance efficiency standards, we can make meaningful progress toward reducing energy burdens, generating big savings for consumers, and cleaning the air we breathe,” said NJPIRG associate Rachel Vresilovic.
