Sets example for other states to follow, especially during COVID-19

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam signed a series of laws over the weekend that will make voting easier. The package includes making election day a state holiday and creating 45 days of early voting prior to Election Day.
In response, U.S. PIRG’s Democracy for the People campaign director Joe Ready released the following statement:
“Participating in democracy is worth celebrating. By declaring Election Day a state holiday and expanding early voting, Virginia lawmakers are creating more opportunities for Virginians to access the ballot box while at the same time maintaining access to a secret ballot.
“At a time when Americans’ ability to safely access the polls is threatened by the novel coronavirus, there’s no better time to be considering and taking steps to make it easier for citizens to participate. These reforms will improve the health of our democracy. We encourage other states to do the same.”
