Media Event: New report sheds light on damaging gas pipeline leaks

Media Contacts

BOSTON — MASSPIRG will host a virtual media conference to release a new report by MASSPIRG Education Fund, Environment Massachusetts and The Frontier Group that analyzes federal state-by-state data on methane pipeline leaks. The report uncovers the total number of serious gas leaks over the past decade, finding out whether the frequency has changed and makes recommendations for how to avoid potentially deadly gas disasters in the future. The report comes almost four years after Columbia Gas was responsible for a series of gas explosions in Merrimack Valley.  The series of explosions and fires in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover resulted in the death of a young man, 22 hospitalizations, the evacuation of 50,000 residents and a state of emergency that lasted for two years.
