Boston – Statement of Deirdre Cummings, Legislative Director for MASSPIRG, on the 11 to 7 vote by the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform in support of “The Moment of Truth: Report of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform,” released earlier this week.

“While the Commission’s report was far from perfect, it is encouraging to see bipartisan support for finally putting agribusiness subsidies, corporate giveaways and unnecessary and outdated defense spending on the chopping block.

“It is now up to Congress to take the baton and work to eliminate wasteful or harmful subsidies and ensure that sacrifices are spread to corporations and banks that have benefited from government bailouts, handouts, and tax breaks.

“Working with the National Taxpayers Union, MASSPIRG has identified $600 billion over 5 years of specific cuts that have support from across the political spectrum. In addressing the federal government’s wide budget gap, members of Congress should start where there is this kind of widespread agreement.”

Read the MASSPIRG and National Taxpayers Union study “Toward Common Ground: Bridging the Political Divide to Reduce Spending.”

Read the report, The Next Trillion, which identifies additional revenue proposals.
