With higher utility bills in the forecast, Massachusetts renters and homeowners can now apply for state financial support to help cover part of their costs during the colder winter months.
The Massachusetts Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is a free resource to help eligible households pay a portion of winter heating bills. The program opened the application process this week and will run from Nov.1 to April 30 2025.
The program is free to apply. You can apply online or in person through a network of local service providers. No matter what type of heating source you have, HEAP may be able to help you pay your winter heating bills. All Massachusetts residents are encouraged to explore eligibility for this free program and apply for assistance.
Eligibility depends on income, household size, place of residence, and other factors.
-
Household income must be below 60% of state median income.
-
You don’t have to be on public assistance nor do you need to have unpaid heating bills.
-
Your local agency will determine if you qualify; eligibility and benefit information are available online here.
Information about the program is here and the application is here.
NOTE: It is free to apply, beware of scams by people charging an “application fee” to help submit an application.
