Tell the FTC: Stop tech companies from selling kids’ data

Good news: Stop & Shop is making it easier to use their “digital coupons”
Local supermarket chain Stop & Shop announced today it would make it easier for consumers to access their “digital only” coupons by installing kiosks in each store preventing the digitally disadvantaged from being locked out of the coupons and the significant savings they can provide.
A large segment of the population – millions of shoppers without internet access or access or ability to use a smartphone – are not able to access the “digital only” only deals. According to a 2022 Pew Research Center report, 25% of seniors do not have internet access and 39% do not own a smartphone. As a result, those shoppers, often elderly, must pay higher grocery prices than their more tech-savvy counterparts.
“A sale is a sale and should not be tied to anyone’s ability to have or use a smart phone,” said Deirdre Cummings, MASSPIRG Education Fund’s Consumer Program Director. “This is a smart move for Stop & Shop and I hope the other supermarkets will do the same.”
Two years ago, MASSPIRG, and a coalition of consumer organizations including Consumer Reports, PIRG, National Consumers League, Consumer Action and Consumer World, called on major supermarket chains to make the digital coupons available to those without smart phones or internet access. Stop & Shop was the first to take action.
Stop & Shop, the largest supermarket chain in the North East with stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island, expect to make the kiosks available in their stores by early next year. To access the coupons shoppers can scan their loyalty card or enter their phone number and get access to their digital coupons.
