Webinar raises awareness on toxic PFAS, the ‘forever chemicals’

Massachusetts has a lot to learn about toxic PFAS “forever chemicals.”

That’s why, on July 13, MASSPIRG and Clean Water Action joined U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern and state Sen. Jo Comerford for a webinar about PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). A bill to ban toxic PFAS from carpets, rugs, furniture textiles, cookware and personal care products is under consideration on Beacon Hill.

Speakers on the webinar included Dr. David Reckhow, a professor of environmental engineering, who spoke to the myriad health problems that PFAS can cause and their status as “forever chemicals” that persist in the environment and our bodies. Maureo Fernandez y Mora, the associate director of Clean Water Action, explained what we need to do to solve the PFAS problem.

MASSPIRG Legislative Director Deirdre Cummings outlined how our lawmakers can and must act to realize those solutions. “Consumers should be able to trust that our carpets and our makeup aren’t full of toxic chemicals,” said Deirdre. “Alternatives to PFAS-treated products exist. But even without alternatives, is the threat of less shiny makeup worth the risk of cancer?”
