UMass Amherst commits to 100% renewable energy by 2032
UMass Amherst's big Earth Day reveal points to a bright future for renewable energy in the state.
On April 22, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst committed to running on 100% renewable energy by 2032, one of the strongest commitments of its kind. This action follows over five years of advocacy by MASSPIRG Students, with support from Environment Massachusetts and Environment America.
“Across Massachusetts, the energy used in our buildings is responsible for more than 40% of our global warming pollution,” said Ben Hellerstein, state director Environment Massachusetts. “The work underway at UMass to transition to clean, all-electric buildings could set a powerful example for other institutions and businesses to follow.”
Environment Massachusetts this summer is canvassing support for the 100% Clean Act, which would set 100% renewable energy goals statewide. We also hope to see the UMass commitment spur the creation of more solar, wind and other renewable energy projects.
